    Haleakala June 2011

Haleakala is the largest dormant volcano on the earth, from its base below the sea to its height it is not the highest mountain on the earth but it is one of the tallest. Only Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii are taller. Haleakala tops Mount Everest from base to top by 675 odd feet! The drive to the top is one of the steepest vehicular ascents in the world to 10,000 feet from sea level.

    Haleakala Silver Sword 2011

World famous for the rare Silversword plant, awe inspiring sunrises and incredible geology, Haleakala is a place of wonder that has so much to do and so much to see. Hiking in the 11 kilometer double erosion basin is recommended for anyone fit enough to endure the rugged terrain and sparse amenities. The National Park Service maintains 3 cabins for visitors and 2 campgrounds. There are horse back rides and you can also day hike down the Sliding Sands trail and up the ‘Switchbacks’ but be sure your in shape, even the day hike is a 9 mile doozy with 2.9 miles up steep switchbacks.

    Inside Haleakala - Cinder

Wait a second now, hiking is not all that’s in store on Haleakala, no there’s inspiration and awe for everyone, not just the rugged hikers. The sunrise at Haleakala’s peak is world famous and there are tours to take you to see it. Also exceedingly popular are the biking tours which bring you into the park for sunrise (or later if your not that eager to get up at 2 or 3 am.) and then drive just outside the park to bike the rest of the way down to Kula, Makawao or even sea level in Paia. Check out some of these great Haleakala Bike Tours right here through the links right here! If you solo rent a bikee sure to stop at Kula Lodge on the way down for a hot meal and a warm atmosphere with a great view. And remember, whatever way you enjoy Haleakala, is the right way, being one of the biggest mountains on earth has advantages after all, including the ability to please everyone.
