Makena Maui is world famous as a paradisaical playground. Makena landing is a popular location for launching kayaks, snorkeling with turtles, scuba diving and discovering sea life. Mamkena Beach (Big Beach) is popular for family outings, skim and boogie boarding, people watching, picnicking, and sun bathing.  Makena Beach (Little Beach) is known for its tolerance of nudity, Sunday night fire and drum circles, and laid back attitude. The waves are also generally much smaller than on Big Beach.

A couple of caveats though: Big Beach can be very dangerous, waves can become very large very fast and come in sets of three and sometimes more. If only a few or less people are swimming it’s a good bet to stay out of the water here. The “dangerous shore break” signs on shore will also alert you to potential hazard.

To get to Little Beach, you have to climb up a somewhat challenging rocky hill. It can be easy for the very fit and most teens and twenty somethings but can become challenging for older or less fit visitors. You can try it out without getting stuck though, it’s easy to get back down. Although Little Beach is known as a nudity tolerant beach, be forewarned that there is the occasional raid.

Well August has proven a great month here on Maui and  it is clear that Boss Frog’s lovers are excited and very satisfied.
