Molokini History

Molokini Crater is shown to have erupted 230,000 years ago through potassium-argon dating.  SInce then, this volcanic atoll was shaped through erosion by the ocean.

There is evidence that the Ancient Hawaiians visited Molokini to fish & possibly for eggs from seabirds.

The US Navy used Molokini and the surrounding islands for target practice During World War II.  All of the
unexploded munitions were detonated and removed on and around Molokini from 1975-1984.

Finally, in 1977, the Crater and 77 acres surrounding it were declared a Marine Life Conservation District.  Ocean life has since been restored and the reefs are flourishing once again.
